This
training programme was designed to address a number of issues raised in research
commissioned by the London Development Agency into the skills and training needs
of the tourism industry in London. One of the main findings of the research
was that the industry suffers from high staff turnover. Of more interest was
the finding that often staff leave because of the poor management skills of
their manager or supervisor. Many supervisors in the industry are promoted on
the basis of their technical competence and given responsibility for staff,
but have not been helped to develop the required management skills.
Other issues highlighted in this research was the lack of accessible, affordable training courses suitable for the tourism industry.
In answer to the issues raised in the research, the programme delivered by Shoregate/SHINE is to benefit supervisors, junior and middle management in the hotel and tourist attraction sectors as it aims at improving their management skills and helps them to retain and develop the staff that they manage. Participants will gain the practical management skills that tourism businesses need, whilst being away from work for the minimum time.
The combination of Management Masterclasses with Mentoring is the uniqueness
of this course. The short masterclasses provide participants with an understanding
of the management tools and techniques that they need in their jobs while
the mentoring reinforces the learning in the workplace through the support
and guidance of a senior professional, all in a safe and confidential environment.
The course also provides e-learning opportunities through the members’
only section of this website. This area provides additional practice exercises,
background reading and e-learning modules for use by the participants at any
time during the course.
